Did you notice?

On your way to the Egypt exhibit, did you see the sculptures near the stairs? You probably noticed they're very different from the Egyptian sculptures.

Take a look at the sculptures in the Ancient Egypt galleries.

What do you notice?

What are some things you saw on the 19th Century American Sculpture that you don't see on the Ancient Egyptian ones?

What are the sculptures of people wearing? What are the sculptures made of?

Did you notice the faces?

Some of the faces are more "realistic" while others are what we would call stylized, meaning its features can be symbolic and are not realistic. For example, the Ancient Egyptian statues are very symmetrical to symbolize perfection and closeness to the gods.

Vocabulary Word: Symmetry

An object is symmetrical when one half is a mirror image of the other half.
