A hatchment like this was often found hung in Protestant churches to show which families helped maintain the church. This one is from a family who lived in Albany a long time ago. 


As you look closely, there are symbols, animals, shapes, colors, and designs which have meaning to the specific family. It’s what you might call a family coat of arms. 


Take a good look at this one and then think of what you might have on your family hatchment. Is there a certain animal or color that is important to your family? Maybe certain names or words would be included. Talk with your family members and see what each person would add on to a hatchment. What do they think is a symbol of your very special family?
